The Attakkalari India Biennial 2011
is a unique platform for individual and fresh voices in contemporary movement arts and serves as a forum for the exchange of expertise in dance, design and research. It is a showcase of global movement arts with a special focus on works that incorporate new and emerging technologies in digital arts and interactivity. The festival presents a range of emerging trends and voices in dance from India and across the world as well as some established artists.

Apart from performances in auditoriums, installations and site specific work, the festival will also host master classes for dancers by visiting artists; a weeklong choreography laboratory for young choreographers; Dance on Camera - a section on films dedicated to dance; a 3-day seminar on 'Body, Performance and Writing' on Jan 31st, Feb 1st and 2nd that promises to offer several artistically and intellectually stimulating discourses; an intensive program for South Asian journalists on dance appreciation led by internationally reputed writers.

Over the years this festival has carved a niche for itself in the dance arena with a growing global interest in Attakkalari’s work. Artists from various parts of the world come together to present their work, share their experiences, exchange ideas, explore new territories and throw open a dynamic space for creative expression through performance, network and collaboration. It is here that standards are set and aspirations for reaching new heights are fomented. This year the focus is on young and emerging choreographers and journalists writing on dance, especially from South Asia to provide them with an international platform and the opportunity to learn from the best in the world through a series of workshops, seminars and performances.

Established in 1992, Attakkalari is a registered, public charitable trust formed by artistes from different disciplines to help create contexts for contemporary movement arts. Attakkalari has facilitated the development of an enhanced and extensive programme that includes national and international Platforms for Exchange and Performance; Strategic movement and Digital Arts development; Research and documentation; new performance works by the Attakkalari Repertory; a Diploma in Movement Arts and Mixed Media; and Education and Outreach programmes
