Bangalore's Rock 'n India with Richard Marx & Backstreet Boys

He was here, played some of his best numbers and left people gasping for more. And when that wasn’t enough – the boys did the trick.

What was the buzz  over the weekend? India's international music festival – Romanov Red Rock ‘n India. Two years of the musical fiesta, and organizers had  promised to make it bigger as the years go by. The 2008 episode saw two of the biggest and loudest bands that the world knows till date: Machine Head and Megadeth. 2009 proved to be even better, leaving none to complain – it was Iron Maiden, the U.K.-based-band performing to an enthralling audience of close to 20,000 people.

All said and done. But, the biggest surprise possibly was yet to unfold to the            music aficionados from the country – and that was, the third edition of the musical extravaganza. Drifting away from the mainstream metal and rock genre, the bands performing at Palace Ground yesterday were the American vocal group, Backstreet Boys, and the American singer and songwriter, Richard Marx. One, however, could hear some loud music by four other bands sharing the same stage. Strumming away the evening, was two of the best Indian bands that the country has seen: Swarathma and Five Little Indians. And then, it was Prime Circle (band from South Africa) and Jayce Lewis who made the decibels go high in the amplifiers.

But the anticipation was clearly more for the latter part of the concert, and that was when two of the most awaited acts were to happen. Dressed in blue denim and a black-striped waist coat, Richard Marx left Bangaloreans fazed with his powerful vocals. Juggling between a few guitars (acoustic and electric), Marx belted some of his best numbers, which included some the hits like Satisfied, Hazard, Endless Summer Nights, Now and Forever, and of course, the one that looked more like the crowd’s favorite – Right Here Waiting. Needless to say, the music was in sync, so were the vocals.

The gig featured a line up of two guitarists, one in the lead and Marx doing the rhythms, and a bassist. Drums couldn’t be missed for it synchronized so well with the rest of the music, and there was surely a clear demarcation between the acoustics and electric. While for a musician it is the audience that decides the success of a live in concert, there clearly was a strong connection between the audience and Marx yesterday, when the artist was seen addressing the crowd, often, during his performance. He even tried showing his love for the country by saying a few lines in Hindi. Marx, perhaps one of the most promising singers and song writers from the world of music, received a thunderous reception from the audience, far louder than most of the other solo artist who has shared the same stage.

Audience – the combination of people from different age groups – seated amongst the audience, were barely had a moment reeling from what they had just witnessed, when the next big thing happened. Dressed in black and white clothes, the group, Backstreet Boys, started their performance with their hit song ‘Everybody’ accompanying it well with synchronizing dance moves. The band wooed the audience with numbers like As Long As You Love Me, Quit Playing Games, and Straight Through My Heart leaving audience screaming and shouting with joy, gasping for more. The well choreographed moves, punctuated well with their songs got them a lot of accolades from the onlookers. With a promise to be back next year for their own tour, the four-member band not only sang their all time hits, they danced and acted too, all to the delight of their crazed fans.

However, many old fans of the 'Rock 'n India' are disappointed as the last two chapters featured heavy metal bands as the headlining acts, but organizers seem to be happy with what has gone behind this time as well. Being committed to live music in the country, we at DNA networks have kept up to our promises, due to long standing requests from fans all over the country for mainstream music and classic rock, we have adapted the line-up for the music festival Romanov Red Rock 2010 in India edition 3,” said T. Venkat Vardhan, MD, DNA Networks. He added, “Bangalore has also been added as a venue due to craving music fans in the city.”

Red Romanov is the official sponsor of the mega music festival in association with Force India, Pepsi, VH1, Hindustan Times and Daily News and Analysis.

I hope DNA redeems itself by roping in Dream Theater for 2011. That, I guess, would be the only way they can pacify our wrath. I guess we can forgive them once due to the fact that they brought us Megadeth and Maiden. Still, they have to keep in mind that our patience runs thin. If they decide to bring in other pansy bands next year too, it's gonna be an all-out war!!! Considering the fact that this year's turnout was the worst, I hope they realize their mistake and pray to the rock-gods for forgiveness. I hope the DNA guys burn their BSB-signed pink t-shirts too!!

I really really feel bad to know that BSB and RM performed on our so-much-awaited "Rock In India concert". Shame shame DNA !!. If you want to entertain some other section of people, come with sensible theme but not rock, you are putting us(rock musicians of india down).Down with DNA

everybody is entitled to their opinions, but slamming other people is not fair...you shouldn't push your opinion down other people's throats...i attended the concert and it was really great

@ Bastich. Quite untrue, there are enough people who wouldn't list the bands you've named as their favourites. My favourite artists are Buckethead, and Iced Earth (both very different, but hey, my choice) and I'm sure there are many more people like me who would name less well-known acts (not necessarily new ones) like Pain of Salvation, Nightwish, Amon Amarth, Blind Guardian, and their ilk as among their favorites.

I was disappointed that DNA chose to bring the Backstreet Boys this year, especially since there were rumours of Dream Theater showing up this year. However, I'm also happy, as it means I haven't missed anything special due to my boards :)

With regards to your last point, didn't Beyoncé come here a year or two ago? I don't think she's exactly a "yesterday".

it seems like a lot of you are very angry. and what profanity in a public forum! shameful i say.

How can you call this event - Rock in India if you are getting Backstreet Boy n shit !!!
After illustrious bands such as Megadeth and Iron Maiden taking stage in 2008 and 2009, DNA now brings lame ass faggots such as BSB !!! Shame on you, DNA. You have let down all the rock aficionados in India. Please don't call it a Rock n India again. -- a disheartened rock fan who was looking forward to Rock in India 2010 with some rock/metal bands headlining.

Sagar Feb 23rd, 2010 12:23 AM

THEY SUCK!! that too connected to rock? gayness!! literally too x( :(

Aditya Feb 22nd, 2010 11:42 PM

BSB may have their fans, but that group shouldn't headline a rock festival. Either DNA change the name of the event to something other than a "rock" festival. Now,it is as ridiculous as BSB performing at an Indian classical music festival - ie they will be out of place in that event.

you are just a listener...you said something about backstreet boys and boyzone,,k i agree...what do you know about pink floyd?? so far no one has the tone and style..what they've got.....man you are just a music listener..it shows..80s bands are always best

ANAND BALAJI Feb 22nd, 2010 10:39 PM

This is the best report I've read on the Rock do at Bangalore. So much for our mainstream newspapers!
I'm a seasoned journo... so I know good copy from bad!
Keep it up Nishal.

These bands know they have no market left in the West. Hence, all the "yesterdays" has-beens rush to India. We indians only listen to a few bands. Any desi I talk to has the following (or a combination) as their favorite bands - backstreet boys, boyzone, pink floyd, eagles, bryan adams (you get the picture). They have no taste as to the latest music, neither do they have any taste other than pop/rock. Hence, the yesterday's music prodigy's rush to India when their dollar base gets low - and we ignorant indians keep filling their accounts by listening to the same tripe music over and over again.

I doubt Miley Cyrus or Rhianna would perform in India. Bet you 100 bucks if you ask the average "knowledgeable" indian about them - they'll most likey say "duh"!!

Rahul Feb 22nd, 2010 09:33 PM

Yeah. I'm sure the show was brilliant.
Drums, lights and dance moves were synchronized, but was the lipsynching spot on? Haha. Fuck Backstreet Boys, Mainstream bullshit, and fuck Rock In India 2010. You better redeem yourself DNA, or you'll are going to make a lot of enemies. And if you aren't, don't you fucking dare use the word Rock again.

deepthy jagadish Feb 22nd, 2010 08:14 PM
