Is it Bengaluru or Bengalooru? Survey of India to decide
Is it Bengaluru or Bengalooru? K N Srinivas has submitted a petition to the state government to change the city’s name from Bangalore to Bengalooru.
The Karnataka High Court on Thursday directed a petitioner to make a representation to the Survey of India on the issue of change of the city’s name from Bengalooru to Bengaluru. The petitioner, K N Srinivas, had moved the high court against the state government’s decision to recommend such a change.
Srinivas had submitted that the state government took a decision to change the city’s name from Bangalore to Bengalooru on October 27, 2006, but in its recommendation to the Union government it chose Bengaluru. He stated that ‘uru’ (in Bengaluru) means nothing in Kannada while ‘ooru’ (in Bengalooru) suggests a place or location. Therefore, the government’s recommendation of ‘Bengaluru’ should be rejected.
Earlier, the government informed the high court that it had picked ‘Bengaluru’ only after consulting linguistic experts. On Thursday, however, the Government submitted that it had no objection to the suggestions made by the petitioner. Chief Justice J.S. Khehar and Justice A.S. Bopanna directed Srinivas to submit his representation to Survey of India within two weeks. The organization would subsequently forward it to the Union government.
