Zumba, an exhilarating dance-workout
programme is fast catching up in the city. Zumba is a fusion of Latin and International music and dance themes that create a dynamic, exciting, and effective workout system. Reana Shah, a dance trainer says, “Zumba is a combination of different forms of movement, such as salsa, cha cha, samba, tango and meringue and even a little bit of belly dancing. The music is an important part of this workout and is mostly contemporary and international. It is very fast-paced and combines dance and fitness moves for cardiovascular health, toning and strength building,”

The dance which originated in Columbia was introduced by dancer and choreographer Alberto Beto Perez. He stumbled upon the concept of Latin inspired fitness when he forgot his aerobics music. Grabbing what he could find from his car, traditional Latin music and meringue, a new workout was born. Reana says, “It is ideal for people who do not like the idea of gymming and want to tone down without much effort. Zumba gives you a full body workout and burns up to 500 calories in an hour long session,”

She adds,” We generally start off with aerobics combined with slow rhythmic movements that help to tone and sculpt the body. The warm-up and cool-down sessions are similar to regular aerobics. Zumba is a mixture of body sculpting movements with easy to follow dance steps practiced to some high pulsating African beats and Latin rhythms. Just about anybody can learn this, and once you get the steps right and know how to maintain a steady rhythm, you can even practice it at home,”

Some of the moves of Zumba include jumping, squatting and kicks, which also makes it an ideal workout for the lower body. Also there are different levels of Zumba and one can opt for them depending on the fitness levels. But Reana says it is ideal to start with Zumba Basic which starts off with simple steps drawn from various Latin dance forms.

Talking about how Zumba is soon becoming a hit among Bangaloreans, Reana says, “There are no hard and fast rules with Zumba. You just have to enjoy the music and move your body in rhythmic movements. It’s more like a dance session coupled with your regular workout. You can easily lose up to one-two kilos in a month. Apart from that it is even ideal for pregnant women since it uses slow rhythmic movements,” So what are you waiting for, enroll for Zumba classes today and dance yourself into shape!
