At least 160 passengers have died in the crash,” V.S. Acharya, Home Minister of Karnataka, told reporters. “Only five to six people have been rescued so far, they've been taken to the hospital, their condition is not known,”

Nearly 25 fire brigades and ambulances have been pressed into service. The fire fighting personnel rushed to the location immediately and so far has managed to rescue six people. The rescued people have been admitted in AJ hospital of Mangalore.

The entire area around Kenjar village near the crash site and the airport has been cordoned off. According to sources “The length of the runway is comparatively small but the cause of the accident is yet to be ascertained but the weather factor cannot be ruled out,”

The airport is at Bajpe, which is about 30 km from Mangalore. It is situated in a hilly area and is considered one of the most difficult airports to take off and land. The area has also been experiencing heavy rains for the last two days due to Cyclone Laila.

UPA’s ceremonial function for the release of 'Report to the People 2010', which was to be preceded by the dinner today has also been canceled, due to the air tragedy.

Minister for Civil Aviation, Praful Patel and Home Minister V.S Acharya will be visiting Mangalore today to further probe on this.

Netizens have been showing their support on twitter and facebook.
Akksa tweeted saying, " My Deep Condolence to the victims of Mangalore Crash, day didn't start good for India,"

Jaimaa, tweeted "Sad day for India, esp Kerala. many migrant families loose their earning members. many kids :( will never fly airindia,"

Air India and the airport authorities have given out helpline numbers.

When you have to consider about lives, nationalists will not count Enghuy.. Really Bad Day for Inadian aviation History. May God rest the souls in peace.

RIP - all those who died near Mangalore in Air India aviation accidents.. to give us more safety, long runways..

namitha nazareth May 22nd, 2010 10:40 AM

  Hi Guys,
Sadly this was  waiting to happen and I was told by many friends and family members that runway was too short and every one knew it. My family traveled between Dubhi and Mangalore and I always prayed the day they were travling from mangalore.  and visvirsa.  Sadly our  safty  and system comes and works only when things like this happen. I am sad  for thouse families who lost their loved ones and god give them strength in this hour of
  sadness .

Enghuy May 22nd, 2010 10:38 AM
