Indians hold key positions world over

More and more Indians are getting recognition world over.Dr Neeraj Patil of Gulbarga District is elected as the mayor of the London borough of Lambeth.

Indian’s definitely seem to be going places. First it was Indian-origin Kamla Persad-Bissessar who was elected as the first woman Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago and now closer home, Dr Neeraj Patil of Gulbarga District is elected as the mayor of the London borough of Lambeth.

This is probably the first time that a doctor of Indian origin is occupying this office. ”It's a great honor. I'm truly grateful to the councilors of Lambeth constituency. This is the most diverse borough,” said Patil.

The official mayoral swearing-in ceremony was held on May 26 night at Brixton Town Hall in Lambeth. “He had called me after the ceremony. I was overjoyed. There is no greater pleasure than this," said mother Parvati Devi Patil.

Patil has also been honored with the Karnataka Rajyothsava Award and the Aryabhatta Award. Patil belongs to a politically active family in Kamalapura.

Patil is now gearing up for the big job on hand: "The biggest challenge I face is to get the economy back in order. The figures of national debt are mind-numbing. It has to be brought back to normal by smart savings. Running a country or a borough is much like running a house. It's all about making efficiency savings before affecting front line services," he said.

In 2006, Patil achieved the distinction of becoming a councillor of Lambeth council in London. And in 2008 he became the first Indian after Dadabhai Naoroji and a few prestigious others to contest for Parliamentary elections in Britain. Dr. Patil lives in London with his 5-year-old daughter Nikita and wife Anagha who is also a Doctor.

As for Persad-issessar, a grandmother of two and a devout Hindu said “I am grateful for the immense support from women and women’s groups across the country and to the extent that this helps to break the barriers so many competent women face. I celebrate this victory on their behalf. But, the picture is much larger than any single group and those very women would be the first to acknowledge that.”

Persad-Bissessar was a topper in law school and she did her masters in business administration and diploma in education from the University of the West Indies. She was the first woman attorney general and also served as minister of legal affairs as well as minister of education.
