In time for the St. Peter's Day celebrations and the Old Cottonians Association Ball, Mybangalore introduces you to one of the oldest and most illustrious schools in the city, Bishop Cotton. The Old Cottonians are active on Social networking with Cottonians Connect like Facebook and LinkedIn and hold regular events and re-unions that gives the Cottonians a strong sense of their alma mater as well as being a great support platform and an opportunity to network with fellow Cottonians. 

 One of the most significant moments in a parent's life is finding the perfect school for a child. Not just a good school; a school that blends compassion with discipline;  a school that has a high standard of academics and an extraordinary display of extracurricular activities. And two such Institutions that have been delivering only the best over the years are Bishop Cotton Boys' School and Bishop Cotton Girls School. The schools have continuously kept a high standard of excellence. 

The fact that these Schools have been acknowledged as the No. 1 Schools among all metro schools in India, the best schools in Bangalore and two of the ten best schools in India, has come about through design, not by happy accident. Learning here is not a question of textbooks alone. Bishop Cotton Schools
Founded on April 19, 1865, by the St. Mark's church Chaplain, the school took the name of Bishop Cotton of Calcutta. After five years, in 1870, the school acquired its present site of 13 acres at a cost of Rs. 22,000. This school was a co-education oriented and a separate school 'Bishop Cotton Girls School' was started exclusively for girls’ later, thus making way for Bishop Cotton Boys School exclusively for boys. The spirit of the school is symbolized in its Latin motto NEC DEXTRORSUM NEC SINISTROSUM (Neither to the right nor to the left). 

The House System 
In order to develop team spirit, co-operate effort and friendly rivalry, the School is divided into five Houses named after five illustrious former Warden/Principals: Pettigrew, Pope, Pakenham-Walsh, Elphick and Thomas.

Alumni 
Notable alumni (Old Cottonians) include Biocon Chief, Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, Nandan Nilekani, Lucky Ali, Harish Bijoor and Gopal Krishna Pillai, Union Home Secretary, Government of India.

In-house Magazine 
what is the best way to reveal the innermost talents and thoughts of an institution of 6000 gifted students? Prathibimb, is the monthly house magazine that is published by the students of the respective houses under the guidance of the literary department.



FACILITIES
Laboratory 
The Elphick Research Centre is spread over four floors measuring 10, 647 sq.ft. Built at a cost of Rs. 2 crore, this impressive building houses the physics, chemistry, biology and computer science laboratories. The computer lab is equipped with the latest equipment. Teaching here is done by means of a projector. The structured system of learning is at par with any training provided in the corporate sector.

Library 
Library has a storage space for over a lakh books, with a Reference Section containing the latest editions. The Library can accommodate a hundred students at a time.

Sports 
Bishop Cotton has always laid emphasis on Sports. The main focus is on Cricket, Hockey, Football, Gymnastics and Athletics. All the sports are played throughout the year. Each section of the school conducts its own Sports Day.

Summer Camps are organized for coaching the students. Celebrity players who have visited Cottons include Ricky Ponting, Bret Lee, Kapil Dev, Anil Kumble, Mohammed Azharudin, Rahul Dravid, Virender Sehwag, Javagal Srinath, Sunil Joshi, Robin Uthappa and Prakash Padukone.

Extracurricular activities 
Inter-Class and Inter-House Competitions are held on a regular basis in Dramatics, Music, Elocution (English, Hindi, Kannada), Quiz, Sports, IT-related activities, Essay competitions, Spelling and Art Exhibition, amongst others. Cottonians also walk with prizes at several inter-school competitions.

Old Cottonians’ Day 
There are Old Cottonians' all over the world with associations which are active in India, Australia and the UK. Old Cottonians' Day is observed every year on June 30 where these old Cottonians visit their alma mater.

Bishop Cottons is holding their annual St. Peter's Day celebration with the Old Cottonian Association Ball being held at Eden Gardens at the Palace Grounds on June 29.
