City to get Urban Affairs University
University of Urban Affairs will soon be launched in Bangalore. The first of its kind, this university has courses on urban planning for students and working professionals.
Bangalore will see India’s first university on urban affairs soon. The Indian Institute for Human Settlements (IIHS) is setting up its campus in Bangalore, with the state government sanctioning land for it at Kengeri.
The varsity will be unique with the curriculum designed by eminent experts in urban planning to nurture talent in the field. “The building of the university and its courses will be different and based on real time learning; so the planning for the university needs a holistic approach” said Aromar Revi, director, IIHS.
The faculty includes best of academicians and professionals in urban planning and even government agencies. Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University College of London, African Centre for Cities are some of the institutions from where the faculty will be drawn to IIHS. These institutes would also fund IIHS’ university.IIHS will also offer a Masters Program in Urban Process (MUP). This program is open for professionals and students from next year January.
“The idea behind having students from every background, from engineering to social science to public health, is to create a system of learning where knowledge on various subjects can be shared and utilized to make urban processes and systems work better,” said Revi.
The course includes three layers, first contemporary India, second settlements and environments and third will engage students to practice their learning on the field. Students will be able to get hands-on experience with government and private stakeholders dealing with urbanization of places.
