Google translates to Kannada now

Google will now translate over 63 languages in Kannada. This includes English, Tamil, Telugu, even Chinese and French.

The web giant Google has now launched its ‘Translate Tool’ which enables Kannadigas to read in ‘Kannada’ anything written in Spanish, French, Portuguese, Chinese, Japanese and 56 other languages of the world. This effort by Google is to explore the linguistic diversity of the Indian sub-continent. This new tool will also support five new experimental alpha languages: Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Tamil and Telugu. Previously this facility was only available in Hindi, Marathi, Punjabi and Malayalam. This feature is a part of the Indic web facility by Google.

Indian languages often use the ‘Subject Object Verb (SOV) ordering ‘(type of languages in which the subject, object, and verb of a sentence appear in that order) to form sentences. Whereas English uses Subject Verb Object (SVO) ordering (sentence structure where the subject comes first, the verb second, and the object third). This difference in sentence structure makes it harder to produce fluent translations; the more words that need to be reordered, the more chance there is to make mistakes when moving them. If you’re using a translator, you’ll also be able to take advantage of  machine translated output when using the Google Translator Toolkit.

This translation service is welcomed by the tech-savvy Kannadigas and feel that this will open doors of technology to people who know only Kannada. This service also gives a global platform. Soumya Venkatesh, an IT professional says “This service will be quite handy as my parents who are not that well versed in English will be able to read in their mother tongue. They will now be able to explore various informative blogs in English, French and Chinese in the native language.” The Kannada Development Authority (KDA) who had recently imposed that learning Kannada is mandatory if you have to stay in Karnataka is quite happy with this new invention. They believe that this will popularize the language of the land globally and will bridge the gap between Kannadigas and the non-Kannadigas.
