Advertising is a service industry which concentrates on brand building through effective communication. It is also closely connected with marketing. Its main job is to create awareness about a particular product in the minds of the potential buyers through visual or oral messages. This field has grown considerable in the last decade as the media industry also witnessed a tremendous growth. Today, new areas are emerging within advertising like event management, image management, internet marketing etc.A student interested in advertising can do a course in mass media which also covers advertising. There are also specialised courses in advertising/mass communication at diploma level and post graduate level for which basic qualification is graduation. Advertising field offers a range of interesting careers. The job in this field is categorised into executive and creative section. Executive side includes Client Servicing, Market Research and Media Research. Creative side consists of copywriters, scriptwriters, visualisers, photographers and typographers. The main areas of work in this field includes media department, production, photography, market research, television and film, event management, promotion, direct marketing etc.

“There is a lot of scope in advertising these days as it’s a highly competitive world now. You have to creative, able to generate ideas, need to know the pulse of your audience and have a flair for good writing. A fresher can start earning anywhere between Rs 8,000 to Rs 14,000. With experience of couple of years one can earn up to Rs 25,000 to Rs 35,000. This field is very lucrative and also has a lot of potential,” says Tanya Nigam who heads her own advertising firm, Vision Media.
