Bangalore entrepreneur, Harish Hande wins Ramon Magsaysay Award

Harish Hande hailing from Kota near Udupi has made all Indians proud. This Bangalore entrepreneur has won the prestigious Magsaysay award for his remarkable contribution in rural energy service.

Bangalore which has been an abode
to many eminent personalities has got another such person who has made all of us proud. The 44-year-old Harish Hande has been honoured with the Magsaysay award for his pragmatic efforts to put solar power technology in the hands of the poor, through his social enterprise.

Hande who graduated from IIT Kharagpur obtained a PhD in energy engineering from the University of Massachusetts in the US. During his graduation, he interacted with American environmentalists and also, visited the Dominican Republic, a  leader in energy initiatives in the Caribbean. Later, he established the company called 'SELCO India' in Bangalore which provides affordable renewable energy services to poor villagers along with doorstep financing and services.

"It is a humble moment for all of us at SELCO. The award in a way justifies the path of social sustainability that SELCO has always strived for. The award will motivate all employees in SELCO to push forward its mission and hope to inspire many more to start various social enterprises that can reduce poverty in the world,” Hande said. Nileema Mishra of Maharashtra is another Indian who won the Magsaysay award  She is the founder of Bhagini Nivedita Gramin Vigyan Niketan in Maharashtra's Bahadarpur village.

Congratulations Dr Hande on being awarded the Magsaysay Award for innovation in rural energy initiative. I own agricultural lands in Vidarbha region of Maharashtra and wish I can do something for the rural household on the enrgy front. If you can respond, would be glad to discuss issues with you.
