Bangalore road-wetters beware, you are under close watch

Think twice before you pee in public as the Deputy Mayor of Bangalore, S Harish has introduced a new move where citizens caught urinating in public places will be fined and their pictures will be put up on a website.

The menace of people urinating
in public places like skywalks and underpasses will hopefully come to an end in the city. Deputy Mayor, S Harish is encouraging citizens to take photographs of people who pee in public places and upload them on the website set up by him. The offenders with also be slapped with a fine. Besides, the civic body has also decided to come down hard on those caught spitting in public as well.

The initiative by the members of Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) seems to be one of frustration caused by the flood of complaints regarding the maintenance of such infrastructure projects, which the corporation has spent over Rs. 1,000 crores on.

“It is sad to see that the educated folk  not  heeding to simple rules , they urinate and spit in public and some even dump their garbage in public areas. First of all, the Palike is finding it difficult to manage 198 wards and we would appreciate it if the public is aware about such a simple rule," said Standing Committee Chairman,  Geetha Shashikumar Shashikumar.

In an over populated city where one half of citizens are poor and homeless, there should be free public urinals maintained by civic authorities before stringent measures like photo publishing is resorted. The poor and slum dwellers  defacating on roadsides is not uncommon.Does the Dy. Mayor plan to publish all such photos at public places at civic expense?  Bravado must be balanced with commonsense.
