Now you don’t have to travel all the way
to Malleswaram to enjoy ‘Hallimane’ food, as the South Western Railway, Bangalore Division, recently opened a new food court at the Bangalore Cantonment Railway Station. Hallimane which means ‘village home’ was started almost nine years ago just off the leafy Sampige Road, it is now thronged by Bangaloreans from all over the city.

Though not as big as the restaurant in Malleswaram, this food court serves the same delicious food in a great ambience. This is a first-of-its-kind initiative by the Railway department to provide a facelift to Bangalore East and Bangalore Cantonment railway stations. The small food court on Cantonment station has a rustic ambience with tiled roofs, natural brick walls, and high ceilings. It provides all major South Indian dishes including the traditional Kannada food of Bisebilebath, Kharabath along with the idlis and dosas.

And if you don't feel like having South Indian food and prefer something more light, there’s a bakery which sells all kinds of snacks, cakes and pastries. The bakery also stocks freshly made sandwiches and burgers which you can pick up on the go. Hallimane started by N Sanjeev Rao, is one of the most popular South Indian restaurants in the city. Sanjeev, who has an experience of more than three decades in the industry has single-handedly built up this food empire.

“Hallimane is popular because they try and keep the taste of the food simple and authentic which makes people go back to the restaurant time and again. This was definitely needed, as there’s no good eatery around Cantonment. Now we don’t have to carry food from home or worry about having stale and oily food at the station. And especially when you have an early train to catch, you end up eating junk. It’s a nice initiative, and I hope it lives up to the expectations," said a customer at the restaurant.
