In Pictures: The taste of Dewar's lives on

Dewar’s Marine Sea Food at Assayee Road pays homage to the great food that was once served at Dewar's Bar in Bangalore.

Started in 1933, Dewar's Bar was one
of the oldest bars in Bangalore. Not long ago, photographer Arun Dawson captured the old world charm and spirit of this bar with his photography and showcased his work at an exhibition. His photographs captured the spirit of Dewar’s and all it came to symbolize to a Bangalore fast bereft of old landmarks and identity.

Dewar’s was the iconic, colonial legacy that existed in the heart of Cantonment Bangalore, till the 15th of December, 2010. This quaint bar etched its imprint on the heart of many Bangaloreans. Though regulars still lament the closure of this place, they now have a chance to re-live the old experience at Dewar’s Marine Sea Food.

Located near Bodycraft Salon & Spa on Assayee Road; this dine-in cum takeaway place serves the same food that was made in the Dewar’s kitchen. Situated in a garage that can barely accommodate eight people at a time, this joint serves sea food in addition to chicken and mutton dishes. Run by Chief Cook John Thomas along with his wife, this modest eatery provides no-nonsense home cooked food. “When the bar closed, I wanted to do something on my own and couldn’t think of anything else than starting a food joint of my own. This eatery pays homage to the great food that was served at Dewar’s.” says Thomas.

Here you will find tasty dishes such as traditional fish fry, prawns fry and kababs offered in three variations.  Either deep fried, in red gravy or a spicy pepper curry.
They also serve old-time favourites like boneless mutton head curry, brain, kidney and paya. “People come here to try the head curry which is a favourite among many. Also the chicken and mutton biryani is quite popular here. We serve pretty much the same dishes that were served at the bar, but the only difference is we don’t serve alcohol. The food is freshly prepared everyday and we source the sea food from Russell Market.” he says.
A meal for two would cost Rs.250. The restaurant is open from 11.30am to 10.30pm. Free delivery for orders in a 1km radius, for details call 9902227315.
