Lake-a-thon: Walk to save the lakes in Bangalore

Lake-a-thon will give you a wonderful opportunity to create a greener and safer Bangalore.

Nearly 90% of Bangalore's lakes
are on the verge of extinction according to a study by the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board. The grim situation is a red signal to the authorities to take urgent measures before lakes could be wiped off the landscape of the city. Officials say the lack of funds compel them to lease out lakes. A lake of 25 hectares requires nearly one crore rupees for restoration. But most private players are using them for their vested interests leading to deterioration in the situation. Lake-a-thon, an initiative started by United Way Bengaluru, a non –profit organization will kick start on July 31, 7 am at Kaikondanahalli Lake, Sarjapura Road.

The main idea of holding such an event is to create awareness among public about the status of lakes and also, engage citizens in lake rejuvenation programmes. Citizens can walk around the lake with their relatives and closed ones to express their solidarity with those protecting lakes. The city is witnessing an alarming decrease in the number of lakes, down from 937 in 1937 to only 212 lakes in 2010.
