Posted by adithimathews  |  25. August 2009

Come Wednesday and Bangalore city is all set to witness a twelve day theatre festival – AHA! International Theatre for Children.  Organised by Ranga Shankara and Britannia, the festival which was conceived in 2006 reiterates this year to ‘make theatre a part of children’s lives’. AHA! Begins on the 26thof August and will be on till the 6th of September.

This year the festival has taken on an international flavor with plays from Australia, Germany, Argentina and three plays from different parts of India. In addition to this the festival will have the world premier of Zapperdockel and the Wock, one of Ranga Shankara’s own productions which is directed by Wally and Paul Schmidt, Germany. Specially in store for the theatre festival is ‘Theatre for infants’ that are exclusively researched plays for infants over 20 months. The highlight of the festival is the play, “The Great Lalula” Schnawwl Theater Mannheim’s (Germany) charming production for infants’ 20-months and more. Apart from just showcasing this play, Ranga Shankara has also scheduled a workshop for Pedagogues from around India to learn the craft from “The Great Lalula’s” German creators.

Also lined up is a seminar on Theatre Pedagogy by Wolfgang Schneider, the president of ASSITEJ which will address key issues of Pedagogy in India today. A talk on ‘Why theatre’ by Dr. Shekar Seshadri an actor, musician and Professor of Adolescent & Child Psychiatry at NIMHANS  will answer this what draws children to theatre.

With non stop plays, seminars, international productions etc lined up throughout the day, there is also a theatre and music extravaganza by children through out the day.  The month of August and September will therefore bring an unexpected spring season to the children where they will not just witness some good theatre but actively participate, learn and grow from the experiences of all the events surrounding the festival. And along with the children, parents and teachers will briefly see the world through their eyes!
