Bangalore Toastmasters Club (BTMC)

The Toastmasters International is a worldwide organization created for promoting public speaking and leadership. The Bangalore Toastmasters Club (BTMC) is affiliated to the International arm and making significant waves in the city. This first part of the story covers activities and achievements of BTMC.

Bangalore Toastmasters Club (BTMC) is affiliated to Toastmasters International, the world’s leading organization devoted to the improvement of individual Communication and Leadership skills. It is one of the 47 clubs in Bangalore and nearly 12,500 Toastmasters Clubs in over 106 countries. It is part of Area B2, Division B, District 82 of Toastmasters International which includes clubs in India and Sri Lanka. It was started in April 1997 by Claudius Pareira, Peter Anil Rego, Siraj-ur-Rehman and Robinson D’Souza. It is the second oldest club in India, after Smedley’s Speaker Society that also happens to be in Bangalore. BTMC has been a pioneer Toastmasters Club not only in India but also worldwide. The club has a member of all ages ranging from 18 to 65 years old. In the times when people are trying to understand and resolve conflicts among different generations, this club has been a supreme example of equality. Myriad backgrounds of club members have been a keystone in its success.

With the motto “Reinforce your commitment, the club has produced numerous public speakers who have excelled not only in their careers but also as individuals who had impact in the society. The club has taken social initiatives such as “Clean Bangalore”, “Spot the young Talent”  and “Youth  Leadership Program”. When India and Srilanka were together conformed as official District by Toastmasters International in 2006, John Bosco Abraham of BTMC was elected as the first District Governor, highest post at District. However, BTMC has shown tremendous commitment by achieving President’s Distinguished Award for consecutive five years, most by any club in India or Srilanka. In 2008, District 82 was declared the best District in the world and Bangalore Toastmasters Club was declared the best club in the District. Imperatively, it was the best club in the world. With jury still busy with their final decisions, BTMC expects to repeat this feat this year as well.
Members of BTMC too have been creating waves in the country. Aaron Watson, who had won 2nd runners-up at International taped speech contest, along with Rajdeep Manwani swept the District awards by winning the prepared speech and Impromptu speech contest at District level. Aaron Watson is representing District-82 at the International Speech Contest to be held at Connecticut, USA in August. While veterans have been the idol for the new members, younger members are much behind in leading the pack. Pawas Chandra, a relatively young member, currently possesses the record for completing the Competent Communication Certificate in just four months and twenty eight days, which is a record in itself for District 82.

The current president of the BTMC club is Robert Das. With humorous speech contest and Evaluation contests in the foresight, the members of BTMC have been sweating themselves to sweep the awards again up to the District level. Bangalore Toastmasters has played a pivotal role in spreading the aura of Toastmasters International in India and at the same time has been increasing the bar of communication and leadership skills for other 127 Toastmasters Club in India to follow.  Apart from having a city level club, BTMC has opened up corporate clubs for employee development. Activities and achievements of the corporate club would be covered in the next story.
