Golf is often called the elite sport and golf in Bangalore has a distinct flavor of its own. The Bangalore Golf Club (BGC) was founded on June 24 1878 and it is the second oldest Golf club in India. Golf Club in Bangalore has the credit of hosting the oldest inter-club tournament in India along with Mysore. It started in 1878 and is played alternately in both the states. The tournament was so popular that the golfers traveled on horseback for 300 miles in the past. The Bangalore Golf Club has fairly dry and sandy fairways which are lush green meadows which are creditably well maintained. The 18 holes are compacted within just 60 acres of land.

Raj Kapoor, a member of BGC says “My father has been playing golf for a very long time and I used to accompany him on the weekends and that’s how I got interested in the game. Bangalore golf club is truly an amazing place; they are up to date with the latest technology and offer the best services. Moreover the weekends are a riot, with almost all the members gathering to play a game of golf,”

He further adds, “Also the awareness of the sport has increased over the past decade and a half. Corporate houses now see its value as a relationship-building tool. It is a sport to play and to flaunt,”

The second course at Bangalore is more recent, and came about after the government recognized golf as a major tourist attraction and acquired 126 acres of land near the airport for the Karnataka Golf Association. Peter Thompson, the internationally known golf architect, was chosen to design the course, and nine of the 18 holes have already been laid out.

India is the only country in the world to play Golf after Great Britain. Golf in India started in 1829 with the establishment of The Royal Calcutta Golf Club in 1829. Thereafter, a group of enthusiastic golfers got together in December 1995. They formed The Indian Golf Union which is also the controlling body of the game.

Golf in Bangalore has become immensely popular and a whole lot of people are getting attracted towards the game nowadays. Golf Club boasts of multi-purpose facilities and activities other than just playing golf. Located at Sankey Road, it maintains a pro shop that is one of the best equipped golf shops in the area and is fully stocked with a wide range of clothing and golf equipment.

The bar at BGC has some interesting memorabilia tracing the history of the club. A large number of flowering trees, which include the colorful gulmohar, palm and eucalyptus, are planted along the tight fairways. Raj says “It’s difficult to get membership here however they have affiliations with all the top clubs in India, so that’s the only way you could get membership without having to shell out too much.
