Venture Tuesday: Designer Cakes from Happy Belly Bakes!
Started by Pastry Chef Thripti Ahuja and Chocolate Connoisseur Shisham, Happy Belly Bakes specializes in making custom made designer cakes. From desserts decorated with crystals to exotic theme cakes, they add a designer element to all their cakes.
The city’s bakeries do whip up famously delicious cakes. But, there’s something unbeatably different about customized cakes with all its freshness, fluffiness and aroma. Happy Belly Bakes repertoire includes the exotic - from designer cakes to handcrafted chocolates, they use the finest ingredients as they serve those who have a discerning taste for the finest food.
Started by Pastry Chef Thripti Ahuja and Chocolate Connoisseur Shisham, Happy Belly Bakes is already doing quite well, with them getting about three to four orders for customized cakes in a day. “We were initially operating under a different name and it was done on a small scale, but we wanted to revamp it and launch it in a more big way. So that’s why this complete overhaul. It’s been about six months now and the business is definitely growing,” says Shisham, who was earlier working as a media planner.
Happy Belly Bakes makes no ordinary cakes; they add a designer element to all their cakes. Desserts decorated with crystals or sprinkled with shimmery dust or resembling works of art like the marbled effect on the icing — the options are endless. “Designer cakes are all the rage now and people often come to us with a vision of how they want their cake to be. And we try our best to match that. We’ve done some innovative theme cakes and being able to deliver the best is our USP,” she says.
Happy Belly Bakes has about eight people working under them and they are constantly working at perfecting the art of baking. “Usually these designer cakes look great from the outside but don’t really taste good but we make sure that the flavours hit you right from the first bite. From the cream to the butter, only the best ingredients are used. We never compromise on taste, no matter how good it looks, if it doesn’t taste right then there’s no point making cakes. Taste and flavour is more important to us,” Says Shisham.
Happy Belly Bakes takes about a day or two to bake designer cakes. And regular orders are done in just a day’s time. “The staff is well trained and quite efficient so we are adept at churning out cakes after cakes in time. It all depends on the size and ideally we’d like to be informed in a days advance,”
Further expanding their business, Happy Belly Bakes recently setup a café in Richards’ town. The café which is located in the quaint residential area can accommodate about 10 – 15 people. “We don’t want to rush in with things, we are taking it slowly. The café is just four months old and we’ve got amazing response because of our specialized menu. It’s completely designed by us and has everything from cakes to coffees to snacks,” she adds.
As for the future, they want to take it slowly before planning to expand any further, “We’ve got requests to set up franchisees but we want to just focus on the café now, maybe in the future we will think about setting up similar cafes across the city,” Says Shisham.
