Venture Tuesday: Marrygold – Boutique matchmakers for the Urban Indian

Many young people today are on the lookout for an ideal life partner but don’t really have the time or energy to find someone suitable. That’s where Marrygold, a city-based marriage portal pitches in and helps connect two like-minded people.
Everyone has their own private fairy tale; we are all in the pursuit of the perfect life partner. But in the hustle and bustle of the urban living, people have lesser time to interact and choose life partners. That’s where Nandini Chakraborty and her team step in as matchmakers and make the whole process a lot easier.
Marrygold which was set up in 2005 by Nandini is a personalized, offline, matrimonial matchmaking service for today’s urban Indian with a clear priority to help only individuals who are definite about marriage. Marrygold is coined from the flower ‘marigold’, which is used along rose petals to shower blessings on couples in Indian weddings. The orange colour of the flower signifies Hope and Optimism. “Our service is based on matching men and women as individuals first, regardless of caste, language, community, history, or horoscope,” explains Nandini.
Their focus is not on finding similar backgrounds - i.e. similar community, caste, language and so on, but rather on personal compatibility and shared values. It soon became obvious that there was a growing number of people across India who wanted this type of 'liberal' matchmaking. Nandini decided to address this need in a more organised way and that’s how Marrygold the company was born.
Explaining how it works, she says “We invite applications first; all the profiles are scrutinized for details of age, occupation and background. After scrutiny, we meet up with the person to get a feel of how he or she is and how serious the person is about marriage. The meeting is compulsory, without which we don't progress. And once we find someone who could be compatible on the database, numbers are exchanged and we help them meet,”
She further adds, “The couples get to meet at least three times. In the first meeting it may not be possible for them to get to know each other. In the second meeting, probably, they have a rough idea and by the third meeting, they give us a feedback as to whether marriage is workable or not. If it works out, it's great. If it doesn’t, we continue to look for other matches for them,”
No profiles are put up online, all the matchmaking is done by Nandini and her team, “We are not an online marriage bureau portal, we work only as a facilitator for people to connect and meet. So far seven couples have tied the knot, and seriously numbers do not matter, what really matters is, getting two like minded people together,” she says.
Even the parents are left out of this process, they are involved at a later stage once the couples meet and want to take it ahead, “A lot of people have asked us to change our working model, but we are not doing matchmaking for the parents, it’s about two individuals who want to spend the rest of their lives together, so this is how it works best,” points out Nandini.
After years of successful matchmaking, Nandini is taking it one step ahead by organizing singles event in the city, where like-minded people can meet and interact. “It’s not a speed dating event, but a venue for singles to meet and connect. Again not just everybody can walk in, we go through profiles of people who want to be a part of the event and only after thorough scrutiny, they can attend the event. We’ve conducted three events so far, the last one being during the FIFA World Cup Final. We plan to conduct more such events in the future, as it provides a perfect platform to busy working people to connect over a fun evening,”
Marrygold’s clients range in the very wide age group of between 25 and 50. There are over 600 registered members and about 100 active members. Registration costs are between Rs. 5,000 and Rs. 10,000 and matchmaking fee can vary between Rs. 10,000 and Rs. 50,000.
