Vidyarthi Bhavan, serving best masala dosas since 1943!

Vidyarthi Bhavan located near Gandhi Bazaar forms a symbolic representation of old Bangalore. This place is best known for Masala Dosa, the dosas here are a marvel; an arms length, crisp, ghee-roasted and served up with delicious chutney.

If crispy ghee-roasted dosas are your thing, then you must visit Vidyarthi Bhavan atleast once in your lifetime. Situated in the crowded area of Gandhi Bazaar, this restaurant was set-up in 1943. Vidyarthi Bhavan got its name from the fact that it was a popular eating place for students from nearby colleges such as National College and B.M.S. College. They were the restaurant’s first patrons before its masala dosa gained legendary status and started drawing the family crowd too. And since its dosas became so popular, the owner stopped making other dishes and started offering masala dosa as the main dish.

SM Krishna, Girish Karnad, Ananthnag and many others in the line of the famous Bangaloreans are the regular clientele of this place. The Mysore masala dosa, soft inside and crisp out side served with a lump of melting butter on it, along with the fresh paste of coconut chutney, is what makes people come back to this place. Shivanna, a waiter who has been with Vidyarthi Bhavan for over a decade now says “Almost all famous Bangaloreans have come here to try our dosas, people have even asked for the recipes. There is nothing extra that we add to the dosas, it’s prepared with great care and served with lot of love,”

Vidyarthi Bhavan has a narrow longish hall which can seat around 35 to 40 people at a time. The cleanliness and hygiene of this place had started to deteriote over the years. But since a lot of people started complaining about it, Vidyarthi Bhavan was recently renovated. Few things that really draw your attention to this place include the simple interior with portraits of eminent personalities of Karnataka as well as photographs of celebrities who have dined at this historic restaurant.

“Our clientele has increased ever since we renovated this place, before people had to wait for a long time to get a table, now we’ve rearranged the seating and can accommodate more than 40 people at a time,” says  Shivanna.

For breakfast, they also serve other items such as Idlis (with sambar and chutney), Khara bath, Kesari bath as well as Pooris. In the evenings, the extremely popular Rava Vada, is served as an appetizer. However to order the delicious dosas, one will have to wait for ten to fifteen minutes because everything is freshly prepared and they make 10 - 15 dosas at a time.

Also one of the most important reasons for Vidyarthi Bhavan's popularity is the value for money that is offered by them. For a meagre 50 rupees, one can have more than a full-filling snack comprising of a Masala Dosa, Idli, Vada and coffee. So head to Vidyarthi Bhavan to experience the true taste of Old Bangalore!

Vidyatri Bhavan, of course is one of the best selling Dosa's those days, i believe those time the Dosa's served were very very good, since the time is gone and the taste is also gone with time. People throng the place only with the old name and fame.

I am a Dosa lover too.  I think Vidyarthi Bhavan is definitely over rated.  It was good earlier but not now.  There are many other places in Bangalore ( like Davanagere benne dose ) where you will get dosa with better quality, taste and price.  But my bet is still on home made Dosa :) which is far ahead of any of the hotels.

thanks

Hi ,
The dosa at Udupi Krishna bhavan , Balepet bangalore is still the best .Vidyarthi Bhavan is overrated and overpriced.

I am quite a Dosa person and in my personal opinion, this Vidyarthi Bhavan is quite over-rated. The dosas are too greasy and even the chutney is not so great.

My personal favorite is the Mylari Dosa from Mysore. ,ay be you guys should consider reviewing that and putting up an article.

the top picture is fake, check out d bottom picture u wil get to know exactly how it wil be dey put 1 dosa in plate and wil fill d chatni in same plate no bowls and all (u wil feel dat ur having BADAM PURI instead of masala dosa ) and only name is driving the business not the quality
After seeing some program in TV i also went there to check weather the Dosa wil be dat much good , i went and ordered a DOSA, when dosa come to my table i already had 2 Rava vada with in dat time..(after the ordering at least it wil take 20mins to reach ur table)
