A secret ballot was called in to choose the BJP legislature party leader after the central leaders' efforts to find a consensus candidate failed. Gowda, 58, defeated his closest competitor Jagadish Shettar, Minister for Rural Development and Panchayat Raj with 62 votes and finally emerged victorious.

He caught the attention of political bigwigs in June 2007 when he played a pivotal role as an active BJP player and helped in forming their first government south of the Vindyas.
Meanwhile, its celebrations time for Sadananda Gowda’s family. “Throughout his political career, DV has always remained clean. He has given his best for the sake of the party. I am sure he will be one of the best CMs in the state. I pray that he never gets into any scams and continues to live upto his clean image,” said his wife Datty.
