History of the Four Rings
The Audi emblem of the four rings denotes one of Germany’s oldest automobile manufacturers. It symbolizes the merger in 1932 of four previously independent motor vehicle manufacturers; Horch, Audi, DKW, and Wanderer.
Horch at the time was already a number one car manufacturer and the founder was a pioneer in automotive engineering. The company was founded in 1899 in Cologne but in 1909, August Horch withdrew from the company he founded and set up a new enterprise called Audi. The name Audi is a Latin translation of his name that means “ Hark”. Wanderer was originally a bicycle manufacturing unit and then the idea of branching out into automobile production came in with the production of a small 2-seater called a “Pappuchen”, that then marked the entry of Wanderer into motor production. DKW Started off as a manufacturing and retail unit for exhaust-steam oil separator for steam raiing plant, mudguards and lighting systems for motor vehicles.
