Joint degree with IISc-IIMB
The Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore (IISc) and the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) will offer joint academic programs in all areas of Science (pure science and engineering) and Management from the next academic year
Now, you can get a degree from two premier institutes in Bangalore, all at the same time. Wondering how? Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore (IIM-B) will be offering a joint programme from the next academic year which will be a great boon to the students. The UG course which will start at IISc from next year, will have some component of social sciences and management subjects. This will be taught by IIMB faculties,” said Prof S K Biswas of IISc. In the next phase, both the premier institutes are looking for having some joint programmes like UG and Phd.
A source in IISc said, “The planning commission is looking for ways to replicate these undergraduate courses in institutes across India.” There won’t be any entrance test for these four-year UG courses which will include research papers in the final year. Prof Biswas said, “IISc has lots of ideas. But to really convert those into products, we need the active support of IIMB. These ideas need business exposure and venture capital. IIMB can help us in these things.”
Recently, for the first time, IISc had announced that it was starting an undergraduate programme. It offers courses in Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Materials, Mathematics and Physics. Students majoring in any of these disciplines can also take up courses in engineering, humanities and inter-disciplinary areas for a well rounded learning experience.
The MOU signed bewteen the two institutes focuses on two goals: to have closer academic collaborations between the two Institutes and to initiate Technology and Innovation Management activities related to science-based Intellectual Property generated at IISc and co-created between the two Institutes.
The academic activities will cover joint academic programs in all areas of Science (pure science and engineering) and Management, and will share the wealth of complementary wisdom and pedagogic experience the two Institutes possess. The Technology and Innovation Management activities will involve joint identification of Intellectual Property at IISc, strategies for its marketing, joint incubation and startup companies between IISc and IIMB. Faculty, students and alumni of the two Institutes will be involved in this MOU. A Joint Board will be constituted between IISc and IIMB.
Professor P Balaram, Director, IISc, sees the need for closer ties between these Institutes to bring innovations in Science closer to Society, and thus make Shri Jamsetji Tata's dream a reality. It was the vision of Shri Jamsetji Tata, the founder of Indian Institute of Science, to build scientific institutions in India which will serve industry, healthcare and society in general.
"We are delighted to enter into this partnership with IISc," said Professor Pankaj Chandra, Director, IIMB. "In this technology-driven age, such collaborations are crucial for development, as academic research benefits society when converted into entrepreneurial opportunities. The intersection of science and management offers exciting opportunities and this collaboration will certainly enhance the output from Bangalore as a knowledge centre." The collaboration hopes to bring together an appropriate mix of transnational R&D, business angels and venture capitalists.
