Mohit Nischol, the Manager for TulleeHo, Bangalore said, “We have been doing quite a lot of business with the F&B sector. We started off as a web portal in 1999, and it was a unique website when it was launched because no has ever taken and initiative to start up something like this. When, we started out as a company, since then we’ve moved on and we have a lot of services to offer. First thing is the TulleeHo bar tending academy, in Bangalore, Mumbai and Calcutta. It’s a two months course that we offer, we have everything from a fully equipped bar counter that helps students how to make cocktails, to a flaring room, where students are taught how to flare. You, basically learn everything to do with bar tending.” He added that the course was perfect for students, who want to pursue a serious career in bartending they come and learn the course. The students are taught the basics of bar tending, right from how to open a bar, and how to close a bar, inventory management. They even go on to the basics of bar-tending, students are made to taste the drink, so that they can figure out what are the raw materials used while making liquor. “We let students taste the drink, so that they can taste the difference between the drinks because, and bar tenders rarely have the opportunity to taste their liquor, and then we have both theory and practical classes. Practical classes are where we give greater prominence, because we teach them everything from making classic cocktails to international cocktails. We have an experienced bar tender and me who takes classes; I personally specialize in wines and whiskey. After they finish the course, they have to give an exam, after which we give them a certificate. The certificate holds well in the industry, because we have good contacts, and we also have a placement cell. We try to set up interviews with various F&B outlets in the city. Now we are exploring the idea of trying to get the experience of placing them in various bars, before they are given their certificates, so that they can have a first hand experience of what it’s like working behind a bar” added Nischol.

He added that so far, three batches have passed out of the academy. Most of the students who come to the academy are Hotel Management students who have either passed out of the school, or are still pursuing their education in the field, existing bar tenders who want to enhance the skills, and one of the most popular courses is bar flaring. “We have a lot of people who take up bar tending as a hobby, and they are from a completely different background”  said Nischol. TulleeHo also organizes workshops like TulleeHo wine experience, ‘on the rocks’ which is a whiskey workshop and another workshop called ‘Cocktail Gurukul’ which is the amateur cocktail making workshop, and beer workshops. “Most of these workshops are three hours long, and we do it on Saturdays generally; we teach people the basics of bar tending, like cocktail recipes, bar equipments, requirements for a party, bar tricks, play games, and in the end everyone gets to take home a certificate. Now, we’ve tied up with Taj, for the tea tasting workshops as well” said Nischol.

TulleeHo emphasizes in all their workshops, that it’s necessary to drink responsibly. “It’s something that we emphasize in all the workshops that we do, like drink responsibly, drive carefully, we encourage students participating not to drink and drive. We want to get across the right message to our students, and it’s one of our base mottos. We also tell people the complications of drinking too much, etc” TulleeHo also trains bar tenders for various F&B outlets across the country, and organize events at various hotel management schools as well.

Nischol said that bar-tending has grown a long way in the country, and continues to grow as well. “Earlier on working in a bar wasn’t considered very well, no one looked up to it. Now, there are so many courses and academies that have come up, and the coming of international bar tenders into the country. People have now started to open up, and take it as a career. Before parents didn’t want their kids to take up something in the alcoholic industry, but now the trend is changing; people are much more open. We have women bar tenders coming up that has also encouraged a lot of women to take up the course. Previously, there weren’t any courses with which you could sharpen you’re bar tending skills, but now you have so many places that teach you the art. People are opening up to the trend, and there is a slight amount of glamour in the job as well.” added Nischol. He also said that in terms of career growth, bar tending has a wide scope in the country with so many F&B outlets, pubs, bars and restaurants opening up in the country. “We see ourselves specializing educating people in bar tending. We want to be pioneers in the field” said Nischol.
