Venture Tuesday: Get yourself groomed by Paljor Gyabak
He implies all that he learnt when he was shortlisted for Mr. Gladrags Mega Model and Manhunt contest in 2006. Having come to Bangalore to pursue his career in microbiology, little did he know, that eventually he would be pursuing his dream.
Today, he is not only a model himself, but owns a grooming institute in one of the most expensive commercial areas in the city – Brigade Road. Alongside, he runs a personality development academy for students in Garden City College in the city, which is called the Finishing School. Meet Paljor Gyabak, a Bhutanese who now calls Bangalore his next home.
Paljor was conferred Mr. Elegant and the Best Model Awards at the Gladrags Mega Model and Manhunt contests in 2006. He was the only boy who was shortlisted from the whole of South at that time. He recalls, “I was thrilled to get a call from the Gladrags. Apparently, I realized that I was the only male model from the whole of South to have been selected for the Pageant, and getting the award was like a dream come true.” The story, however, didn’t end for this model here.
With a prestigious title in his hand, he returned to Bangalore to bag many modelling assignments and advertising projects. “Gladrags was like a big platform for me, my career kicked off after taking part in the pageant. Once I came back from Mumbai, I started getting a lot of big assignments. I even did a lot of advertisements for many big brands, but somehow, I wanted to venture out into the real world, like opening up a small grooming institute for aspiring models,” said Paljor. He adds: “Moreover, I had learnt a lot about grooming and personality development during my one-month training period, prior to the main contest, in Mumbai. It helped me evolve as a model. Meeting many biggies from the industry boosted my confidence, which is when I decided to disseminate the same amongst young models.”
Paljor, along with his photographer partner S.S. Singh, set up their first model grooming institute in Mumbai, which later got shifted to Bangalore. In February this year, Paljor shifted the Institute from Kamanahalli to Brigade Road. “I met Singh when I was in Mumbai. We did a few businesses together, and wanted to try our hands to do something together. That’s when we decided to open an institute in Bangalore. Our first institute was in Kamanahalli, which we later shifted to Brigade Road,” explains Paljor. He continues, “We groom models and help them understand the nuances of the industry. It includes everything, right from table etiquette to grooming to personality development.”
Paljor started this institute only after thoroughly researching having spent a lot of time to understand the nuances of the industry. “It’s a competitive world, and one has to be the best to survive in the industry for long. It was a step-by-step process for me, but, I must say, the training I got for the Gladrags helped me a lot,” said Paljor. His institutes has various packages, but the most common “is the one-month long program, where we teach models about the basic qualities the industry demands, and a portfolio shot in a studio.” Whilst the basic package starts from 20 K, there are other packages which may be slightly expensive.
So far, Flame has groomed more than 100 aspiring models, and now Paljor plans to bring on newer verticals. The company has grown to a larger team consisting of creative designers, artists, photographers, and large number of models and professionals from the advertising industry. The institute works on the field of Model Grooming not only for young adult, but also for children who feel they will be able to excel in this upcoming field as professionals.
The institute also takes up TV Commercial ads, print ad shoots, which will be done by their own creative artists. “Today, we have our own have visual artist, an animator, creative guy and photographers. We are now planning to open up a production house, which would produce Short films. We also have something called the corporate grooming. We have our own trainers including me to take up these classes.”
