BIAL Wins Prestigious Routes Airport Marketing Award

State of the art infrastructure and sustained marketing efforts resulted in attracting seven new international connections to Bangalore in ten months



Bangalore International Airport Limited’s (BIAL) efforts of developing and maintaining positive and productive relationships with airlines are reflected in it winning the Routes Asia Airport Marketing award on Monday. Five airports competed for this award in the Indian sub-continent. In these times of an economic slowdown, it is considered a major achievement for an airport to keep its route network and traffic base stable, let alone secure new routes.

This award is best judged by the airports’ primary customers - the airline network planning community. The airlines within Asia nominated five airports whose marketing efforts during 2009 made a real impact on their future network development plans. The airlines considered the efficient and useful marketing activities of the airport on their network, by geographical region, irrespective of airport size.



The award was based on how creatively an airport has made the most of its available resources and the winners were chosen on the basis of which airports tried their best to develop airline relationships, keep existing routes and secure new ones. In the last ten months, BIA has been able to successfully attract seven new airlines including Dragon Air, Tiger Airways, Air Mauritius, Oman Air, Saudi Arabian Airlines and the new Bangalore – London connection by Kingfisher Airlines.

Important criteria like initiatives taken to improve the airport’s infrastructure, the terminal and runway were taken into consideration. Key initiatives that airports have undertaken to attract new airlines, launch new routes and continue to develop relationships with existing airline partners were also taken into account. The results were measured in terms of the new routes launched and growth in traffic numbers. A key incentive for airlines to fly a completely new route to Bangalore is the rebates that the BIA offers them. The airport also helps airline network planners with studying and identifying the market segments available.



Continuously enhancing the airport’s infrastructure, recent developments include the country’s first of its kind Cargo Village to strengthen Bangalore’s position as a trade and commercial hub and the 33 km underground pipeline commissioned by the airport’s fuel farm concessionaire IndianOil Skytanking Limited (IOSL).
