The New Year has started off on a high for Bangalorean AR Shabbir, who back in the city after winning 9 trophies at the Deccan Quarter Mile Drag 2009. Held for the first time at GMR Hyderabad International airport this event is a collaboration of the Andhra Pradesh Motor Sports Club (APMSC) and the Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India (FMSCI).
Shabbir’s is no stranger in the drag racing circuit as he had won the Speed Run five times and The Hill Climb for three consecutive years in 2003, 2004 and 2005. Ask him what makes him such a speed freak and he is quick to say, “It’s all in- built. I fell in love with cars when I was still in school. The first time I went to race on Mysore Road, there was a technical glitch and I ended up losing. That’s when I decided to be back with a bang no matter what it takes. Since then I’ve never lost!” And, he’s definitely proved his point by not only winning in the Indian car, super car, bike and super bike sections and foreign segments of the same in the recent event but also in the finest car and bike tuner category.
There’s also another feather that’s long been on Shabbir’s cap. It’s that of creating a record for bikes at 10.4 seconds that has been given competition only by a 10.6, that too after 8 whole years from 2000 when the record was created! As hundreds of youngsters prepare to be drag racers, Shabbir comes up with a token of advice. “If you want to be a great racer, then you must always have your eye on the lights. Missing even a beat can cause you to jumpstart or start late. Both can be fatal. One second makes all the difference”, he signs off.
