Bangalore city could not have asked for anything more than the combination of Shankar Mahadevan, U. Srinivas, Sivamani, Zakir Hussain and Selva Ganesh making music together. The’ Heartbeat’ concert which held in the city on the 3rd of December at the St Joseph’s Boys School Auditorium saw music enthusiasts waiting eagerly for the show to start and also to catch a glimpse of their favorite musicians.
Initiating a moment’s silence in the memory of the deceased in the Mumbai blasts, these five maestros started the evening’s musical journey with a combined effort to create harmony and with each performer’s specialty. While Mahadevan started off with riyaz- style of vocals, the others kept pace with him, offering variety at time.
Unlike events that keep the best for the last, the ‘Heartbeat’ concert came out with its highlight right at the beginning of the concert. It had U. Srinivas or ‘Mandolin’ Srinivas playing his beloved instrument with unparalleled ardor and Sivamani play the drums with electrifying effect. If there was anything humorous in the act then it would have to be Sivamani’s attempts to make music with almost everything he could lay his hands on, including a suitcase and, a water can too.
The overall theme of the concert was jazz based with improvisations by the artists. One cannot pin point the highlight of the evening as the five geniuses stole the limelight during each of their solo performances. The overall theme of the evening did send out one message, that of unity in the time of trouble.
